GMC is a one of the highly acclaimed automobile divisions of world's biggest car manufacturing company – General Motors LLC. IT was founded in 1901 and has its headquarters in Detroit, United States of America. It specializes in manufacturing utility vehicles, pickup trucks, vans, commercial & military vehicles, sports and other utility vehicles. According to a survey conducted in January 2007, GMC was the 2nd largest General Motors automobile division in North America; positioned after Chevrolet and before Pontiac. It has a huge customer base across two continents in North American & Middle East Asian countries.
GMC parent company General Motors was founded on 16th September 1908 by William C Durant. It was initially established as a holding company for leading General Motors automobile division Buick Motor Division. It was sold to Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in 1909 established by Max Grabowsky on 22nd December 1901. Its name was later changed to General Motors Truck Company, and thus, the brand GMC Truck was founded. It was known as one of the earliest one cylinder commercial truck maker in history.
Mergers & Acquisitions
Rapid Motors was later merged with Reliance Motor Company in 1911 and its products were marketed under the brand name "GMC Trucks". It had also bought a majority of shares in a leading American bus manufacturing company "Yellow Coach" founded by John D Hertz in 1925. GMC is marketed through dealerships of other leading General Motors car brands – Buick & Cadillac. Other leading dealerships include that of Pontiac, Olds mobile, etc.; GMC was merged with Pontiac in 1996, which allowed it to sell a huge line of premium trucks in order to compete with Chevrolet.
