Xiaomi's MacBook Killer the Mi Notebook Air is out in the Philippines

Want an ultrabook that looks like the MacBook Air, but is smaller, thinner, cheaper and more powerful? Yes, read on then.

Sep 15, 2016

Xiaomi has been on the warpath in the mobile industry for several years now, starting with an aggressive smartphone and tablet strategy that is clearly out to undercut top dogs like Apple and Samsung. Well, Xiaomi's been looking to do the same thing in the laptop category and they intend to do just that with the Mi Notebook Air, a device that looks and feels the same as Apple's iconic ultrabook, the MacBook Air. And since it's Xiaomi, you know they are going to massively undercut the price.

The Xiaomi ultrabook will be coming in two variants, a 12.5-inch version, and a 13.3-inch one. The 12.5-inch version is slightly smaller and thinner, at the expense of a less powerful processor. Battery life, on the other hand, is reportedly better with the smaller model.

The 12.5-inch variant has a Full HD display with 1080p resolution, and will have a 2.2Ghz Intel Core M3 processor inside, partnered with an Intel HD 515 GPU. It will have 4GB of RAM and 128GB SSD SATA storage. A 1-megapixel camera will serve for video conferencing, and it will have AKG-branded stereo speakers, a backlit keyboard, Bluetooth V4.1, three USB ports (one is 3.0 and the rest are 2.0), one USB Type-C port, an HDMI port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The smaller Mi Notebook Air costs PHP 29,900 locally as of now.

On the other hand, the larger 13.3-inch variant, on the other hand, has a much more powerful Intel Core i5 Skylake-U processor clocked at 2.3Ghz inside, paired with a dedicated NVidia GeForce 940MX GPU with 1GB of DDDR5 RAM. It has 8GB of DDR4 RAM, a 256GB SSD drive. The rest of the configurations are mostly the same, although the bigger variant has full USB 3.0 ports all around. The battery life is supposedly two hours shorter on this more power-hungry variant, but Xiaomi is quick to point out that even their bigger Mi Notebook Air is still considerably thinner and lighter than Apple's MacBook Air. The larger version is not available in the Philippines as of yet but goes for CNY 4,999, or about PHP 34,600. The local price will likely be slightly higher than the Chinese pricing, though, so expect it to hit around PHP 40,000 locally.
