Bezel-less war's newest contender: Sharp AQUOS S2 launched!
Sharp recently launches its newest full-screened offering, the AQUOS S2, in Beijing, China. The AQUOS S2 features Sharp's Free Form Display technology, a screen-to-body ratio of 87.5 percent, and a display resolution of 2,040 x 1,080 pixels.
Although Sharp is not that famous in the smartphone manufacturing industry, the company is well-known as a screen maker. Sharp has long before introduced edge-to-edge phone displays to the world, even before the tech giants like Samsung and Xiaomi started making their own. The first-ever smartphone having an almost bezel-less screen is the Sharp AQUOS Crystal which was outed back in 2014. Roughly three years after that significant event, Sharp is still busy in extending the concept further by fitting a large display in a small form factor. The result of the tech firm's vigorous effort is the latest Sharp AQUOS S2, which was launched in Beijing recently, having a 5.5-inch display tucked inside the body of a 4.9-inch handset.
The Sharp AQUOS S2 is bezel-less on the top and the sides while the bottom bezel remains to house the physical home button which doubles as a fingerprint scanner. There's a small cutout for the front-facing camera on the top bezel, sporting a close resemblance with the Essential PH-1. The AQUOS S2 features the company's in-house Free Form Display technology which enables it to have an impressive 87.5 percent screen-to-body ratio. The screen has a resolution of 2,040 x 1,080 pixels, 135-percent sRGB gamut, and 550-nit brightness.
Furthermore, the Sharp AQUOS S2 arrives with the newly-launched Snapdragon 630 chipset with a maximum clock rate of 2.2GHz coupled with Adreno 508 GPU. It ships with 4GB of RAM and 64GB internal flash memory on board. However, there's also a beefed-up variant of the device having a Snapdragon 660 processor paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB built-in storage. On the camera department, it features a dual rear camera setup comprised of a 12-megapixel and 8-megapixel sensor and a front-facing snapper with 8 megapixels. It runs on Android Nougat operating system and packs 3020mAh battery to keep the lights on.
As for the pricing and availability, the Sharp AQUOS S2 carries a price tag of CNY 2,499 (around PHP 19,000) for the 4GB/64GB variant whereas it sells for CNY 3,499 (around PHP 26,600) for the higher-end 6GB/128GB model. It is expected to conquer the markets in a global scale on August 14.
