About Samsung Galaxy Y S5360

Popularity in the Philippines

There is no denying that mobile phones are really popular in the Philippines especially among the younger market. This is probably the reason why Samsung, Apple’s top competitor, has deemed it necessary to introduce a model which is loaded with features while still remaining relatively affordable – the Samsung Galaxy Y S5360.

As mobile phones go, this particular Samsung model has a lot going for it. It is lightweight, boasts of a compact form and handy design and runs on Android Gingerbread. For the younger Filipino market, it is certainly a practical choice and can even be considered as a good starter phone before upgrading to the more hi-tech (and expensive) models. They can be referred to as "transition phone" after being used to the regular mobile phones and be introduced to the world of apps and the mobile web.

Released in August 2011, the Samsung Galaxy Y S5360 is designed like the Galaxy S2 but with more rounded edges and simpler, cleaner look. This feature phone has an internal storage of 180 MB, 290MB RAM and a microSD slot for additional memory of up to 32GB. The TFT resistive touchscreen measures 3.0 inches with 320 x 240 resolution and 262K colours. It has Bluetooth, 2MP back camera and WiFi capabilities as well as Hotspot functionality.

It runs on Android Gingerbread operating system and 830MHz ARMv6 processor. Of course, since it is designed for the younger crowd, the Samsung Galaxy Y has Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk and Picasa already installed and ready to use. There is also the Social Hub which integrates all messages, texts, emails and other updates into one chronological feed for easy monitoring and quick access.

There are also a lot of FREE Samsung apps installed for more fun and convenience. You can always choose to download from Google Play Store other popular apps such as Twitter, YouTube and Angry Birds. Just keep in mind that the small screen and small engine might be a bit limiting. Some apps may not be installed properly due to such limitations.

Considering that it is a budget phone, users are actually surprised with the good quality resolution the 2MP back camera was able to produce. You can easily snap photos of your friends and upload them to Facebook without worrying that the images are blurred and unrecognisable. The video, on the other hand, is not as impressive but would suffice if you simply need to check a clip from YouTube. Anything more fancy than that and you can expect a bit wobbly or fuzzy result with poor audio. To customise, the back cover can be changed with the available choices of Pearly White, Fruity Orange, Bubblegum Pink, Silver Platter and Dark Black.

Last October 2013, an update for the Galaxy Y S5360 was released, the Jellybean 4.2.2 Android firmware, also known as the Jellynoid custom ROM firmware. The update process is actually simple and can be done manually. Before you update into the new firmware, you have to make sure that all data are backed up. It is also important to note that the update can only be performed on units which have been rooted already. If it is, then all you have to do is to download the firmware package from Google Apps and transfer the downloaded files to your phone via your computer. By upgrading to this firmware, you can maximise your phone’s mobile performance.

Since the Galaxy Y S5360 was developed by Samsung, you can expect value for your money. It may not be the fastest budget phone in the market today but it compensates in its performance of basic tasks. Of course, you cannot deny that durability will never be an issue with this handset. True to the "Y" in its name, this phone is really intended for use by the young market. It holds well for playing games such as Angry Birds, posting Facebook status updates and text messaging. Again, this model is designed as a starter smart phone and for such ambition, the Galaxy Y S5360 certainly steps up to the challenge.
