Review: Samsung Galaxy Note 5, still the best phablet in town

Ever since Samsung introduced the original Galaxy Note back in 2011, the world gained a healthy interest in over-sized smartphones that were halfway between a phone and a tablet. That wasn't the only legacy of the Galaxy Note; it also brought back the stylus, which was a necessary component of smartphones and PDAs before Apple revolutionized the industry with the iPhone. So we come now to the Galaxy Note 5, which to many is still the finest Galaxy Note to date.

Aug 30, 2017

Although two years old now, the Galaxy Note 5 still remains the best device in the Note series, owing to the controversial failure of the Galaxy Note7. The Galaxy Note 5 is in many ways revolutionary to the Samsung's Note series. The Galaxy Note 5 came out in 2015, the year that Samsung changed its design language from the cheap, plastic build of the Galaxy S5 to the gorgeous glass and metal design of the Galaxy S6. The Galaxy Note 5 benefits from this change in design language, and the premium build is more than enough to satisfy all but the most demanding tastes.

That, coupled with its flagship-level hardware and specifications, make for an undoubtedly formidable smartphone that ages well even two years later. There are a few caveats to consider, but all in all the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 still remains one of the best smartphones you can buy today.

Design

The first thing you'll notice about the Galaxy Note 5 is how beautiful it is. A radical departure from the Galaxy Note 4, the Note 5 has a metallic frame finished with a powder coat going around two slabs of glass, with the front showing off a fine surface of Gorilla Glass 4 protecting the display. The rear panel is a fine layer of protective glass, and it curves ever so slightly at the edges, similar to the front of its sister phone, the Galaxy S6 edge.

No more do we have to suffer through the Galaxy Note 4's faux leather plastic back, which did no favors for its congeniality. Unfortunately, this design change does come at a cost: the rear cover cannot be removed, meaning that the internals of the phone are off limits to all but the most dedicated service men. That means no user-replaceable battery, a feature which Samsung clung on to whilst its rivals came with phones that couldn't be taken apart.

The tradeoff, however, is a much better-looking device that oozes premium build and sophistication. The gentle curves at the back make the phone easier to grip, making it less likely that you will drop the phone and shatter that oh-so delectable glass finish. The phone is rather large at 153mm x 76mm, yet is pretty svelte at 7.6mm. A phone this size would usually be difficult to handle for people with smaller hands, but the curved edges make it much easier to grip than its size would suggest, and the glass is not slippery.

That's a good thing, because it's still not recommended to drop the phone four feet onto a concrete pavement. The phone will survive the nicks and dings of being in your pocket with some keys or in a bag or purse with an assortment of personal effects, but if you drop it on a hard surface it may shatter or crack. Keeping it in a protective case should alleviate these concerns, and I have personally dropped the phone many times onto a hard surface without anyone the wiser, the phone not showing any signs of damage. The key is keeping it a in a good case, as would be wise for any smartphone at this price range.

Still, the phone does stand up to a lot of wear and tear, and even without a case you won't get any scratches on either the front or the back, and the powder coat on the metal frame is actually more susceptible to damage. If you're not the butter fingers type, you could easily get away with using the phone without a case, and this is especially nice to do considering the aesthetic quality of the phone.

Display

The Galaxy Note 5's display uses Samsung's Super AMOLED technology, giving it an unprecedented level of clarity, contrast, brightness and accurate color reproduction. Samsung's panels have already been critically acclaimed by the industry as the best smartphone displays available, and the Galaxy Note 5 reaps the benefits.

The 5.7-inch screen has a quad HD resolution of 2,560 x 1,440 pixels, with 518 pixels per inch. It's protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4, and the display has held up to a lot of wear and tear over the past two years that I've had the phone. The display is easy to see and read even in bright daylight outdoors, which is one of the most important factors when considering an everyday phone. Combined with the very high pixel density, the strong brightness and contrast levels and the beautiful color reproduction characteristic of AMOLED screens, the Galaxy Note 5 has one of the best displays you'll ever find on a smartphone, on the same level of performance as its successors, the Galaxy Note7 and the Galaxy S8 series.

Specifications

Let's take a look at the Galaxy Note 5's display and internals first and foremost. The Galaxy Note 5 has Samsung's trademark Super AMOLED display which really provides one of the best smartphone display experiences on the market, but the phone's internals are also equally capable.

The Galaxy Note 5 has an in-house Samsung Exynos 7420 processor, which compares favorably with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 810. While there are now much faster processors than these two, the Exynos 7420 is more than enough for day-to-day tasks even two years later, and can run most 3D games without any problems. Coupled with 4GB of RAM, the Galaxy Note 5 is more than capable of dealing with any regular task you throw at it even in 2017.

However, this may soon change once things like Google Daydream become mainstream, as the Galaxy Note 5 is not certified to handle Daydream or Virtual Reality headsets that demand more processing power. That's still ways away, however, as these applications have not gone into the mainstream and are still in the process of becoming widespread in use and popularity. We saw a lot of promise in 2016 for these applications but so far that promise has not yet been realized.

The phone also comes in 32GB and 64GB internal storage configurations. While 32GB may not seem like a lot in 2017, most people will find that 32GB is more than enough, unless they are in the habit of taking a ton of pictures every day. I have been using the Galaxy Note 5 for two years and have took a lot of pictures, but I still have about 9GB of internal storage remaining, and it's easy to clean up your camera roll as the phone is capable of integrating with cloud services like Google Docs, Dropbox and Microsoft OneDrive to store your precious memories and photographs.

One drawback of the Galaxy Note 5 is the removal of the microSD card slot, which was a fixture of previous Galaxy Notes. The option to expand your internal storage is a much-sought after function, and it's a shame that Samsung decided to pull the plug on this feature with the Galaxy Note 5.

Battery Time

The battery is another thing of import. The Galaxy Note 5 comes with a 3,000mAh battery, which is smaller than its predecessor the Galaxy Note 4's battery by 220mAh. That in itself is a cause for concern, as nobody likes to have a smaller number for their new phone. What makes this worse is the sealed design of the Galaxy Note 5, which prevents you from opening the phone up and replacing the battery with a new one in case you need some extra power over the day, or if the battery wears out and dies and needs to be replaced.

Fortunately, even with the lower power rating, the Galaxy Note 5's battery is more than enough to last the entire day with heavy use. In real world usage with LTE turned on and surfing various websites and social media, I could easily start the day with 100% battery life and end it at night with 25% remaining, and if you have some extra work that needs to be done external battery power banks are not hard to come by. In the two years I've had the phone, the battery hasn't degraded either, which is a good thing.

Charging the phone is easy with its fast charger, and the adapter is capable of charging the phone from 0% to 80% in an hour, and full charge in just two. You do need a special charger to achieve these charging times, and Samsung's Fast Charger is of course the device of choice, but similar Qualcomm QuickCharge-compatible chargers also do the trick. The phone will tell you if the feature is working by saying "Fast Charging" while you are charging it.

In addition, the Galaxy Note 5 is fully-compatible with wireless charging using the Qi standard, and this makes it easy to keep the phone topped off to 100% if you are at your office desk or at home with a wireless charger readily available. The charger isn't quite as fast as charging wired, but you can get from 50% to 100% in under two hours with a wireless charger rated at 750mA, like Nokia's wireless charger. It takes around four hours to charge from zero to full.

The S Pen

At the bottom right of the phone is the slot for the S Pen. As with all Galaxy Note models, the S Pen provides you with a writing implement that can write directly onto the screen. I've found this to be useful in many situations where writing a quick note is more useful and preferable to typing it out in a productivity app. It's especially useful for those quick moments where you just need to jot something down.

Of course, it depends on the person, some people are more comfortable typing with their thumbs, some people prefer writing it down in an old school manner. When you pull the S Pen out, it instantly activates the Action Memo app, even if the phone's screen is turned off, allowing you to write on the black screen instantly. This function is very useful and lets you use the device on the fly without even needing to unlock it. Any notes you write in this manner are saved in Samsung's S Note app for later review. The same app can take in type-written notes just as easily, and it makes a great all-in-one notes package.

The Galaxy Note 5 also introduces the new Air Commands feature if you take the stylus out while the phone is turned on, automatically opening a menu of commands that include Action memo, Smart Select, Screen Write, S Note, and Translate. I've found Smart Select and Screen Write in particular very helpful, as they allow you to take a picture or crop a portion of your current screen and instantly save it to S Note, or share it with any of your social media apps. It's the smartphone equivalent of cutting and pasting from a website to post onto Facebook, and no other phone really offers this kind of functionality with this kind of ease and convenience.

Any writing you do uses the S Note app interface, and this allows you to select several different writing features and styles, including a calligraphy style which has a broad nib effect. As a regular fountain pen user used to italic and calligraphy nibs, this is a well-appreciated feature, even if it's not all that pleasurable to write on your smartphone screen compared to some fine stationery.

The only caveat with the S Pen is that it's possible to insert it into the phone the wrong way, which is one quick way to lose the pen forever. If you insert the pen bottom end first instead of the tip, and push it all the way in, you are never getting it out without opening the phone, and you can only do that with the proper tools or by asking the Samsung service center. It's a bad design oversight that makes the phone "not idiot proof," but most people won't be putting the stylus in incorrectly.

Another final feature of the S Pen is its ability to remind you that you just left it behind. If the S Pen is ever about fifteen feet away from the phone, the Note 5 will automatically tell you to check your stylus, as you may have left it behind. This helps prevent accidental loss of the stylus in case you left it out and had to leave in a hurry.

The S Pen is still perhaps the single most stand-out feature of the Galaxy Note line. While it's not for everyone, those that harken back to the days of the Palm Pilot or just prefer scribbling things down instead of typing them will find the S Pen invaluable.

Camera Performance

One of the most important smartphone capabilities is the camera. Samsung made a huge improvement with its smartphone cameras starting with the Galaxy S5, and the Galaxy Note 5 comes a year after that, sporting excellent camera results.

It's clear that there's a little magical software filtering going on after you take a picture, but one can't argue with the results. Untouched by editing, you can get some really good shots straight from the camera using the Galaxy Note 5's auto mode.

The auto-mode has very simple controls, which simply has a front/rear camera toggle for selfies and main camera shots, an HDR mode toggle, flash toggle, a movie/still toggle and the shutter button. A slider lets you adjust the exposure setting on the lens, letting you take in more light or less depending on the shot you are after. A gear button lets you change the settings, switching to different settings, and flicking the screen left will let you change shooting modes. These range from Auto, Pro, Panorama, Selective Focus (to create that Bokeh effect), Slow Motion, Fast Motion, Virtual Shot, Video Collage, and Live Broadcast (setup with your feed). There's also an additional button to view the gallery and the shot you just took.

For the purpose of this review, I'd like to illustrate how simple it is to take great looking shots with the easiest shooting mode, Auto Mode.

Here is a sample of what you can expect of an indoors shot with decent lighting in the afternoon. The details are crisp, and the colors stand out without any problems.

In addition, you can use a white background with auto-mode, the only adjustment you can make to the shot is to increase the exposure setting. This helps when you are trying to get that "Sea of White" effect, and you can use it to take shots like the one below, and crop out the unnecessary stuff at the edges and adjust the levels a bit in an easy program like Instagram or Snapseed to come up with professional looking product shots.

With a little cropping and editing, it becomes like so. Using an even more advanced tool like Photoshop would yield even better results.

Outdoor shots with good lighting are also very easy to do, with good lighting adjustment keeping any shots from looking too washed out, or too dark.

Taking a shot in bad lighting in the afternoon as the sun is going down still yields decent results, so even people who "shoot against the light" or otherwise aren't very skilled in composition can shoot good shots.

Here's the same shot at night, showing off the camera's impressive low-light shooting capabilities.

When it comes to taking selfies, you can count on the front camera to get a good shot as long as you have decent lighting. Remember, the front camera doesn't have a flash unit, so some added skill is needed. The front camera has Beautify settings which automatically fudge any blemishes or imperfections on your face, and generally give you a very artificial facelift, but it looks good. For those that don't like it, it's easy to turn off, and you can even set levels for it from 1 to 5, with the low levels looking very natural aside from smoothing out some imperfections on your skin.

Here is a shot using Level 1 of the Beautify Filter, which leaves my glistening skin looking a little natural, but still smoother than before, with only my deeper blemishes showing. Trust me, I don't look that good in person.

Conclusion

For a two-year-old device, the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 holds up very well. It's a bit pricey as all Samsung flagships are, but if you're looking to get one at this point in time it's going to be a very affordable value-laden bargain.

The best points about the phone are its great camera performance, its awesome design aesthetic which makes it look really premium and classy, and it's overall great performance across the board.

On the other hand, people will be miffed about the lack of a microSD card slot, the non-user replaceable battery, and the lack of IP68 water and dust resistance.

All things considered, when you take into consideration all of its capabilities, the only real rival of the Galaxy Note 5 is the recently launched Galaxy Note8, but it all boils down to how much are you willing to pay.

About Samsung Galaxy Note 5 32GB

The Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is a versatile phablet

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 is definitely one of the best mega-screen smartphones out in the market right now. There is a lot about the Galaxy Note 5 that doesn’t meet the eye at first glance. It is simple, practical and quite an obvious piece of technology. Maybe that’s how Samsung envisioned this phone to be. This model has great design, high on usability, and reviews all across the world claim interacting with your phone through your stylus has never been this fun, engaging and rewarding.

The Galaxy Note 5 in Philippines

Samsung Galaxy Note 5 has gained a lot of fans among users in the last 4-5 months all over the world. The case is no different for Philippines. People who dished out the bucks for this phablet were more than happy with what they got. The Note 5 has great hardware and comes loaded with features. This model is set to be a rage amongst the more urban populaces in Philippines.

Cool features about the Galaxy Note 5

Galaxy Note 5 has some cool things that mostly concern its new stylus which Samsung calls the S pen. With this fun stylus which has an impressive touch response, there are a lot fun things that have been added which are also actually pretty useful and some might find essential:

  • Instant memo: This feature, which is marked as screen off memo in the phone settings, literally means what it’s called. It feature allows you to create an action memo or a sticky note, immediately after you pull out your S pen, regardless of whether your screen was turned on or off. It’s almost like Samsung guessed you might quickly take your S pen out at some point and quickly jot down a few things on your screen.
  • Scrolling screenshot: When taking a screenshot of a long photo or text, the Galaxy Note 5 intuitively lets you capture a larger frame.
  • Easy PDF annotation: The Galaxy Note 5 lets you scribble all you like over your PDF files just the way you could over a screenshot in the Galaxy Note 4.

One thing that might bother customers though, is how most features in Samsung’s Galaxy Note 5 are the same as their Galaxy S6 Edge+. Still there will be buyers for the Note 5 depending on which phone you actually wanted, also there is the price issue which makes the Galaxy Note 5 quite cheaper than others in its class. Still there is much about the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 that you may not be able to resist.
