Spurred by demand, Nintendo doubles profit forecast for its Switch console

Following the strong demand for the hybrid Switch console, Nintendo has almost doubled its profit forecast along with upping the sales target of the Switch to 14 million as against a previous estimate of 10 million. Nintendo says it is ramping up its production to meet the demand of the console in the upcoming holiday seasons in Europe and the US.

Nov 6, 2017

After the mixed response it received from fans for the Wii U console, Nintendo didn't go back to launching any traditional console. They took the risk to launch a hybrid console, the Switch, which can be docked at home or can be used on the go, thanks to its built-in display. And it seems the gamble that Nintendo took has paid off in a big way as the console has gone off the charts worldwide.

In its earnings report it released last week, Nintendo almost doubled its profit forecast for the fiscal year ending in March from 65 billion yen ($570 million) to 120 billion yen ($1.06 billion). Nintendo also revealed that it now expects to ship 14 million Switch consoles until March 2018, up from the previous forecast of 10 million.

Having said that, the 14 million target is pretty impressive given the fact that the previous Wii U could only manage to ship 13.56 million units in its entire 5-year lifespan. Till date, Nintendo has shipped 7.63 million units of the Switch. The figure includes 2.74 million units that were sold in the first four weeks of its release in March this year and 2.93 million units sold in the second quarter of the financial year.

The 14 million unit target seems to be gettable in view of the fact that in the US and Europe the holiday season is about to kick off which will further sustain the demand for the console.

"The true power of the Switch would be tested during the upcoming holiday season." Said, Nintendo President, Tatsumi Kimishima during the earnings briefing. Since the popularity of the Switch is still immense it might work in the favor of Nintendo. Moreover, the console has already hit the halfway mark and this makes it easier for the company to eye up a 14 million target.

All said and done, the pursuit, however, is not going to be easy and smooth it looks to be. First, it is unclear if Nintendo can boost its production to meet the demand despite the company's confidence in doing so. Second, its rival Microsoft is also gearing to launch the Xbox One X console in the holidays too, which might eat into the sales of the Switch console. We only can wait and watch to see how the future for the Nintendo Switch unfolds in the coming months.

Reasons for popularity in the Philippines

The Nintendo is popularly known to make games for all ages and focus on suitable-for-family games that you can play with your family. As Nintendo said that there will be over 80 games for the switch and some of the titles are Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Super Mario Odyssey, Dragon Quest Heroes I and II, Lego City Undercover, and a lot more. And even though this device has an expensive price, still the Filipinos couldn't stop to anticipate that the Nintendo Switch will also come in the lesser price tag.
