Can it be a sure-bet of a dual SIM dual stand-by smarpthone? Tried out the high-performance smartphone, "Moto G5 Plus"

Motorola Mobility Japan released the "Moto G5 Plus," a successor model of the "Moto G4 Plus," on March 31st, 2017. It comes with great features with the price of only 35,800yen (approx. PHP 16,000). We tried out the usability of the "Moto G5 Plus."

Jun 6, 2017

Motorola Mobility Japan released the "Moto G5 Plus", a successor model of the "Moto G4 Plus," on March 31st in 2017. The "Moto G5 Plus" is compatible with dual SIM dual standby (DSDS) like its previous model. The CPU is improved to Snapdragon 625 from Snapdragon 617, and memory (RAM) from 3GB to 4GB. Moreover, this has dual pixel autofocus which is adopted with Samsung's high-end smartphone "Galaxy S7 edge", camera with F1.4 bright lens, turbo power charging which fuels up and gets up to 6 hours of battery life in 15 minutes, gesture function with which you can apply key function with fingerprint sensor. It has attractive functions, which makes it as good as a high-end model phone. Also, the price is only 35,800yen (approx. PHP 16,000). We tried the usability of the such "Moto G5 Plus."

"Moto G5 plus," the successor model of "Moto G4 Plus"

Metal body with aluminum to increase high-end feel.

Let's look at its body first. The "Moto G5 Plus" is 74.0 X 150.2 X 7.7 (WHD mm), and it weighs 155g. The previous model "Moto G4 Plus" used resin material, but Moto G5 Plus comes with aluminum exterior, so it has more high-end feel.

The body is a little smaller than its previous model. The rounded shape makes it fit nicely in users' palm.

The back feels smooth and it is a little slippery. However, thanks to aluminium, overall high-end feel is increased from the previous model. It is not water resistant, but nano coating makes it splashproof.

Sides of the body uses curved surfaces a lot, so it is easy to hold in hands.

Display is 5.2inch full HD (1080x1920), which means it is downsized from the "Moto G4 Plus"'s 5.5inch display. It might be a little too small to use Android 7.0's multi window function, but it is big enough for browsing or looking at pictures. Also, Gorilla Glass 3, which is a well-known toughened glass developed by American manufacturer Corning Inc., is used for the surface of the display.

Below the display is the fingerprint sensor. Once you register your fingerprints, you can unlock the phone in a second; it is very convenient. The response of the fingerprint sensor is excellent. It never failed to recognize my fingerprint while I was trying this out.

It has a nano SIM card/micro SD memory card slot on top.

You can put nano SIM card X 2 and micro SD card in one go, and they can be used at the same time.

On its bottom, it has an earphone jack and micro USB port. I'm not sure about their choice; it is not USB Type-C, which is a popular choice for recent smartphones. If you are used to USB Type-C, using micro USB, which is not reversible, can be stressful.

On the right hand side, it has a volume button and a power button. They are the only physical buttons.

On the back, the main camera is placed and you can see the Motorola logo there. Because the camera is poked out, it makes space when you put it on its back. But because the ledge is wide, it doesn't wobble or become unstable.

There is nothing to complain of with the performance for a middle class smartphone.

Now we have seen what it's like from the outside, let's look what it's like on the inside. The CPU of the "Moto G5 Plus" is Snapdragon 625 (2.0GHz octa-core processor). It is a successor of Snapdragon 617, which the "Moto G4 Plus" had, and it is also used for ASUS "ZenFone 3" or Huawei "nova." Memory is 4GB, so it is improved from 3GB of the pervious model. Storage is 32GB, and it is compatible with up to 128GB microSD memory card.

To check its actual performance, I checked with benchmark test apps, "AnTuTu Benchmark", "Geekbench 4" and "3DMark". The score with AnTuTu Benchmark was 63833, which is relatively high among the smartphones with Snapdragon 625. Big memory capacity of 4GB may be helping here.

With Geekbench 4, single-core score was 800 and multi-core score was 3,800. Single-core score is low, but with multi-core, it got about the same score as Samsung's high-end model "Galaxy S7 edge".

With 3DMark, which shows GPU performance, the score was 463. One of the phones in this score range is Huawei "nova Plus".

When I tried "Super Mario Run" with this, I was able to play it without any delay or jumpiness.

Camera performance as good as that of a high-end smartphone.

Let's look into its camera performance. The main camera is 12MP, so it is less than 16MP of the "Moto G4 Plus," but instead, light intensity per pixel is increased. Also, it has dual pixel autofocus, which is used with the "Galaxy S7 edge," and it enables it to focus fast. Moreover, it has F1.7 lens, so it is suitable for taking photos in dark environment.

I took some photos with auto. Even in slightly dark indoor, it focuses fast.

Purple of the flowers and green of the leaves look sharp, and the color is bright, too.

It focuses almost at the same time as I hold the camera, so all that is left to do is to release the shutter; it's that easy.

With F1.7 lens, you can take photos in dark environment with no problem. I couldn't see bad noise in the photos I took even in dark environment.

Other than auto mode, it has professional mode, which allows you to take photos manually. You can adjust manual focus, white balance, shutter speed, ISO and exposure.

Front camera is located at the right top. It has 85-degree wide-angle lens with f/2.2 aperture. It seems I can say it is perfect for selfies.

I would also like to introduce its filming function. It offers these modes; 480p(30fps), 720(30fps), full HD 1080p(30/60fps) and 4K Ultra HD (30fps). The movie below is filmed with 4K Ultra HD(30fps). It is not compatible with optical image stabilizer, but it has video stabilizer(digital).

One button navigation removes onscreen navigation icons. It is more convenient than I expected.

The fingerprint sensor located at the bottom of the front side works with one button navigation, which enables gesture operation. When you turn one button navigation on, three onscreen icons, back, home and history, are removed, and you can use the screen bigger. You use the fingerprint sensor instead of those icons. It is unexpectedly useful.

One button navigation can be set with preinstalled app, Moto Actions.

When you turn one button navigation on, three onscreen icons, back, home and recents are removed. You use the fingerprint sensor instead. Back is swipe left of the fingerprint sensor, home is tap and recents is swipe right. Once you get used to it, you can operate it super fast; it is so convenient you don't want to go back to onscreen keys.

The battery capacity is 3000mAh, so you can get away with not charging it for a day. Also, when you use the AC adaptor that comes with it, you can use TurboPower charging; it gets about 6 hours of battery life in 15 minutes.

While using TuroPower charging, it shows TurboPower connected on the screen. You need to carry the AC adaptor all the time, but when it is nearly flat, it is great that you can charge it in 15 minutes for 6 hours worth of battery life when you are not at home.

Can the "Moto G5 Plus" be a sure-bet of a DSDS smartphone?

The "Moto G5 Plus"'s rival would be the phones in the same price range with Snapdragon 625; the ASUS "ZenFone 3" and the Huawei "nova." But as for performance, it seems the "Moto G5 Plus" wins for its 4GB memory. Also, with the "Moto G5 Plus", you can use two nano SIM cards and a micro SD card at the same time, but with the "ZenFone 3" and "Huawei nova," one of the SIM card slots is used for microSD card, too, so you cannot use two SIM and a micro SD card in one go.
The "Moto G5 Plus" will be one of the best choice for those who are thinking of getting a DSDS smartphone. Also, compact model of the "Moto G5 Plus," the "Moto G5" was released on March 31st.

About Motorola Moto G5 Plus

Summary

Motorola Moto G5 Plus is one of the latest in Moto G series and included in 5th Generation Smartphones. It's also a smartphone that will return Moto to the limelight. Here is the Moto G5 Plus and once again taking its position and crown as the budget smartphone king.

Motorola Moto G5 Plus

Motorola Moto G5 Plus is one practical smartphone that slots neatly into the brand's midrange portfolio, bringing solid specs under 5.5-inches. It's actually the best budget phone today as it looks, feels, and operates like a much expensive smartphone, which means that the budget conscious users are getting a great deal.

Dazzling Design:

The Moto G5 Plus sports a pretty smartphone that's able to stay kind of compact in spite of its 5.2-inches display. It sports an aluminum finish and the big display definitely feels sturdy and looks nicer from the front making it as a big improvement over its predecessors. It has a dimension of 150 x 74 x 7.7mm and weighs 155g, which is pleasantly thin and light. It feels comfortable to hold because of its slightly rounded back and edges. It comes with a 3.5mm audio jack and Micro-USB port for charging and data transfer at the bottom of the smartphone. It also has a fingerprint scanner below the screen on the front of G5 Plus.

Display:

The Motorola Moto G5 Plus features a 5.2-inches 3 IPS LCD display with a full HD resolution of 1080 x 1920 (~424 ppi pixel density). The Moto G5 Plus also uses Corning Gorilla Glass 3 for protection. The display was good enough for watching videos, movies, and games as its viewing angles were good too. It features Color mode in the display settings that let users switch between standard and vibrant color reproduction.

Performance:

The device comes with an Octa-core 2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 SoC coupled with Adreno 506 GPU graphics. It is an upgrade from the 617 chip of Moto G4 Plus giving the phone a very smooth performance across all kinds of tasks be it Facebook, Messenger, YouTube videos, and Instagram because of the mid-range Snapdragon 625.

OS, and Storage:

The Motorola Moto G5 Plus runs on Android 7.0 Nougat. It also has a Moto app which features Moto Display and Moto Actions. Moto Display shows the preview of notifications even when the phone is locked while Moto Actions lets you access apps quickly with a simple movement. Other pre-install apps are also included but there is a change when it comes to navigation.

The device is supported by 2, 3 and 4GB RAM and an onboard storage of 32GB/64GB which can be expanded up to 128GB via microSD card.

Camera:

Moto G5 Plus comes with an advanced 12MP camera in its class. It supports Dual Autofocus Pixels which locks onto target quickly so you will never miss a shot. It can also be used in dim areas because of its large f/1.7 aperture and bigger pixels which let in more light.

There is also a 5MP front camera with a f/2.2 aperture and display flash that could come handy in low light environment. The camera app is so easy to use and opens without delay.

Battery and Connectivity:

The Motorola Moto G5 Plus is powered by a non-removable Li-Ion 3,000 mAh battery. And according to the company, it will last all day with heavy usage. There's also a Turbo Power that will give the device up to 6 hours of power in just 15 minutes.

The Moto G5 Plus supports dual SIM that accepts both Nano-SIM. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth 4.2, NFC, USB, and FM. Sensors on the phone include a Proximity sensor, Accelerometer, Ambient light sensor and Gyroscope.
