About Lenovo S650

Lenovo S650 carries with it a lot of promises

Lenovo recently unveiled their new entry into the Smartphone market in Philippines, known only as Lenovo S650. It bears similarity with other phones like Vibe Z, S600 and S930 as far as design language in concerned. Lenovo is taking a different approach and focusing more on low to midrange devices unlike other top brands such as Sony, Samsung, HTC, etc. This Dual-SIM Smartphone will put up stiff competition in the market when it finally releases.

Some important features this phone boasts of are: 4.7 inch capacitive display, 540 x 960 resolution, 1.3 GHz Quad-core MT6582 processor, 1 GB RAM, Mali-400MP2 GPU, 8 GB of internal storage, Expandable up to 32 GB via microSD8 MP primary camera , VGA front-facing selfie camera, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, GPS, A-GPS, Dual Standby, Dual-SIM, 3G HSDPA, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and 2000mAh Li-Po battery.

Phone configuration, OS and UI

Powering the Lenovo S650 is a 1.3 GHz Quad-core processor and 1 GB of RAM. This configuration is enough to keep things running smooth for most parts. There is nothing to complain as far as multitasking and switching apps go. Gaming, however, takes a blow sometimes, as the phone experiences stuttering. Casual games like Plants vs. Zombies 2, Battle Hearts and Subway Surfer run buttery smooth, but heavy games like Dead Trigger has its moment of embarrassment.

Android Jelly Bean comes pre-installed out of the box and equips the phone to utilize various apps and games to the best of its ability. Even though the company has yet not made any statements regarding OS update, we are still hopeful. Lenovo’s custom skinning has lent the navigation and UI a life of its own as it feels a lot simpler than before.

Camera features and quality

The primary 8 Megapixel camera of S650 makes it to the passing grade as it offers decent enough picture quality on-the-fly. Colours are not very bright, and do not provide much contrast, the image quality comes out to be pretty good anyway. This device struggles to take proper shots when faced with too much light or the subject is white in nature. The secondary VGA unit just exists because it has to. Image and video quality are neither acceptable.

Battery life

Making the S650 run is a mediocre 2000mAh Li-Po battery that packs a decent enough punch to make this phone hold its own ground. While a better battery is what everyone wants, in the end you get what you pay for. On moderate to heavy usage, the battery should last up to 7 hours in total. This phone is truly a remarkable device available in the Philippines market.

Lenovo S650 shares most of its exterior visuals with Vibe Z, which is actually a flagship model of the brand. Utilizing a faux textured metallic finish, the phone is elegantly decorated with silver trim on its bottom. Since the Vibe Z went on to become an extremely popular model, the carry forward of its design language serves as a welcome entry to S650.

Button layout is nothing unique from other Android phones as it houses power button on top, volume rocker on the right side while 3.5 mm audio jack and micro USB port sits on top and bottom of the phone respectively. Even though the resolution is not HD quality, the maximum of 540 x 960 pixels seems adequate for a phone that has a screen size of 4.7 inches. Colours are vibrant, details are clearly noticeable and saturation levels are just how it should be. We have got no complaints about this screen because of the price this phone is offered in Philippines. This screen, however, stumbles if viewed from any different angle as it experiences noticeable fadeout. The brightness level is also passable and nothing extraordinary.

Lenovo S650 has various other useful tools that work wonderfully like 3G, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity. 3G feature is however a redeeming quality of this phone as it barely experiences any problems under good network. Call quality too is great on this phone as no reports of dropped calls, voice anomalies or misplaced calls were recorded. The 8 GB of default memory can be expanded to 64 GB via micro SD, if the need arises.

Rivals in Philippines

This phone faces stiff competition from Asus Zenfone 5, Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime, Xiaomi Redmi 1S, Microsoft Lumia 535, Huawei Ascend Y550, etc.
