Unbelievable perfection level for Huawei's first laptop!

Aug 15, 2017

Huawei, which has a strong brand power in the smartphone market, released a clamshell laptop called the MateBook X. They have released the 2 in 1 tablet MateBook last year, so it is not the first Windows PC from them, but as a clamshell laptop, this is the first one. I would like to report on the MateBook X which was made utilizing the technique they fostered with smartphones.

Huawei's first laptop, the MateBook X. The one I tried was the Core i5 model.

Compact and stylish metallic body.

Clamshell laptops like the Surface Laptop, the dynabook UX53/D and the ZenBook 3 are getting popular recently. It might be because of the back-action of 2in1 or making the difference clear between tablets and smartphones, but the number of manufacturers adding importance to clamshell laptops are increasing. Most of them are slim and have luxurious metallic bodies with about 13-inch display and weigh 1.2-1.3kg.
The MateBook X is slim with 12.5mm thickness, and it has a 13-inch IPS display. It weighs about 1.05kg. I tried out the Core i5 model in Space Grey; I find it simple and sedate, and it can be used both for business and for private. Designwise, it looks like the MacBook from Apple, and I just thought it was cool. The display is coated with one glass. Its sides are trimmed with diamond technique. The texture of the metallic body is high, too. It has a sandblast finish like their popular smartphones P10 and P10 Plus, and it feels smooth on your hands. As for its bottom, it only has 4 round rubber feet; it is obvious that this is made with attention to details as well as, or even more than their smartphones.

The Space Grey model with sedate coloring. The edges are trimmed with diamond technique, and that makes it look luxurious. The metallic body feels smooth in the hands. Just like smartphones that are used in the hands, I got an impression that they are attaching importance to how users feel when they have the products in their hands.

Slim body with 12.5mm thickness. The picture is when it is opened at the widest.

On its back, it has four round rubber feet. It has three screws, but there are no slits or anything. It looks simple.

It has a slim border with the width of bezel being 4.4mm. It has a 13-inch screen but is compact thanks to it. It is 286mm width x 211mm depth x 12.5mm height. The footprint is smaller than A4 paper (297 X 210mm), so it fits smoothly in a bag. The battery lasts for about 10 hours according to the catalogue, so it is usable for a day without charging. The AC adapter is small, so the portability is very good.
As for color, the Core i5 model comes in Rose Gold and Space Grey. The Core i7 model comes in Prestige Gold. It would have been better if the high-perfomance Core i7 model came in a sedate color like Space Grey.

The bezel is 4.4mm. Slim borders are a recent trend.

The weight is about 1.05kg on the catalogue. When we weighed it, it was 1,067g.

With the AC adapter, it weighs 1,203g.

It has a 3:2 display and a fingerprint sensor.

A 13-inch display is not so common, but it is as easy to use and see as popular 13.3-inch displays. The aspect ratio is 3:2 like the Surface Laptop, but the Surface Laptop has a rather big 13.5-inch display. On the other hand, the MateBook X is compact with slim bezels and a 13-inch display. The resolution is 2160 x 1440, so it is higher than full HD. It also achieves sRGB 100% color gamut and 1000:1 high contrast, so there is nothing to complain about with the image quality. It also has a blue light cut feature like smartphones to protect your eyes. It has narrow bezels, but it still has a web camera on top, which I find good.

13-inch IPS liquid crystal display with high resolution of 2160 x 1440 pixels. You can enjoy movies and photos with high image quality with high color gamut and contrast.

As for audio, it introduced the Dolby Atmos Sound System for the first time with a computer. It is co-developed by Dolby and Huawei, and has the sound they are proud of. Dolby Atmos is the first audio format in their industry that is based on audio object. It enables listeners to enjoy realistic sound. It may be difficult to tell the difference, but when you hear the demo sound on the Dolby Atmos web site, you can see what they mean. What you hear there is the sound in nature like the sound of rain or a jungle, but it makes you feel as if you were there. Even when you make it louder, the sound doesn't crack and the laptop itself doesn't vibrate. You can enjoy the Dolby Atmos sound not only with the internal speakers but also with headphones. It is slim, but they have worked hard on its audio.

There are contents you can experience the Dolby Atmos on Dolby websites. It seems users can enjoy movies and so on with realistic sound.

It has an isolated keyboard. As it is thin, the depth of the keys are only 1.2mm, but you can get the feel that you pressed them and you can type pleasantly. The key pitch is 19.2mm, so it is about the same as standard laptops. The key layout is standard, too. There are no keys that are extremely small. The keyboard has a back light, and it is also water-resistant, so you feel safe even when you spill water on it. The Touch pad is big and easy to use, but it is integrated with the buttons, so it is hard to drag. Other models are the same regarding this point, so it doesn't mean that only the MateBook X is inferior.

I would also like to mention that the settings are simple and easy to understand. It has a specialized menu called the My MateBook, which enables you to check the storage capacity, driver management, system setting (basic information, fingerprint, function keys), backup and restore, and after service. The design of the user interface and icons are easy and simple like smartphones. This also might be coming from their experience with smartphones.

The key pitch is 19.2mm and the key stroke 1.2mm. The layout is of standard JIS keyboard. 1.2mm stroke is not everyone's cup of tea, so be sure to give it a try at the store. Personally, I think it would be passable for most people.

The power button on right top of the keyboard is also a fingerprint sensor compatible with Windows Hello. A fingerprint sensor itself is not rare with PCs, but usually, you need to switch it on, then touch the sensor to log in. On the other hand, with the MateBook X, turning the PC on and logging in can be done with one touch. The accuracy for recognition is high, so it is easy to turn it on and to log in. It can be used to restart from sleep and log in.

The power button and finger print sensor. You can turn the PC on and log in with one touch.

Fanless with U processor.

Lastly, we would like to look at its specification. The one I tried, the Core i5 model, has the 7th generation Core i5-7200U (2.50GHz, 3.10GHz maximum). It has 8GB RAM and the storage is 256GB SSD. Recently, the number of mobile laptops that have better performance than cheap desktops is increasing, and this one is also one of those high-performance laptops. It scored 3196 with PCMark 8 Home accelerated, 318 with CINEBENCH and 120 with single core.
What I would like to mention here is that it's TDP of the CPU is 15W U processor, not 4.5W Y processor, and has no fan to cool it down. They made this possible with their original Space Cooling Technology and with the use of heat dissipating material. The benefit of it being fanless is that it doesn't make much noise and it can be used in quiet places. However, when I did benchmark tests repeatedly, the bottom of the laptop got heated up, and I could feel the heat with the palm rests and the keyboard. It is not a type of machine for big load anyway, but I am a little worried about its performance to drop with the heat.

It has one USB Type-C each for the right and left sides. It can be used for video output, transmitting data, and to get power. But you only can use the one on the left hand side for the AC adapter. When you use the one on the right, it shows a message saying you need to charge the computer using the port on the left hand side. The AC adapter is small and easy to carry. It also can be used for charging smartphones and tablets. If you have a device that is USB Type-C compatible, you can reduce amount of things you carry around.

It has two USB Type-C ports and headphone output. It comes with a USB cable (C to A).

We want to expect a high cost performance like all other Huawei products.

The MateBook X is the first clamshell laptop from Huawei, but its completion level is very high. It has stylish design following the recent trend, and it is easy to use with high performance just like their smartphones. It shows their high technology by realizing using the U processor without fans.
The MateBook, released last year, didn't have models with Office, but they made one with Office to suit the Japanese market where Office being installed is taken for granted; we can see their improvement for their second year in the PC market.
What I am not happy is its price. The lowest price of the Core i5 model, the one I tried, is 140,742yen (Approx. PHP 65,120), and the one with Office installed is 167,958yen (Approx. PHP 77,715). It is reasonable considering its specifications, but I would like to see attractive pricing like their popular smartphone, P10 lite.
