Having large screens with tiny bezels is all the rage in the smartphone world these days. Many manufacturers are taking the lessons taught by Samsung in their Edge series to heart, and have come up with various models to give you that "big screen in your hand" feeling. Among these are entries like Xiaomi's Mi MIX, which provides a huge phone with almost bezels on the sides and the smallest bezels we've seen to date on the top and bottom. One of our local manufacturers, Cherry Mobile, has also thrown in the gauntlet with the Cherry Mobile Flare Infinity.
Although not many smartphone manufacturers can create a beautifully curved edge display the way Samsung does, a lot of the designs out right now have almost no bezels on the sides of the phone. That's what we're seeing with the Flare Infinity, with its gorgeous 5.5-inch Full HD 1080p LTPS no-bezel display. It's edge-to-edge goodness with no borders, all you get is a slight curve on the glass as it disappears into the metal frame. While it may not be all that impressive on the international scene where this kind of display has been out for a few years, it's the first from a local Philippine brand.
That doesn't come without some benefits; the Flare Infinity, as always, is very affordable, costing only PHP 12,999. While it's a touch more expensive than what we're accustomed to from Cherry Mobile, you do get a lot for your peso. Under the 5.5-inch display with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and a metallic unibody design, you get a MediaTek Helio P10 chipset. It's a solid processor for this price range, and even better is the 4GB of RAM supporting it, along with 32GB of internal storage, and the option for microSD expansion. On the rear is a 16-megapixel main camera with a Samsung sensor and dual LED flash, which gives pretty good imaging results. The front camera is 8-megapixel, with a 3,000mAh battery.
One of the most innovative features is a fingerprint sensor on the side, just under the power button provides a new paradigm for where to place the now ubiquitous feature. The whole device is also pretty modern with Android 6.0 Marshmallow and is dual-SIM with support for 4G LTE, and a USB Type-C port.
All in all, the Cherry Mobile Flare Infinity is a huge step up in design and specifications for Cherry Mobile and one that is hopefully indicative of where the local smartphone industry is heading.
