[Review] Cherry Mobile DEFENDER: Why many wants to have one

The IP68 equipped Cherry Mobile DEFENDER sports modern innards and at the same time, gives emphasis to its durability. But is that enough to earn a two-thumbs-up from the people?

High-end specifications and toughness can't be combined into one smartphone- as some people say. We can't deny that the latest smartphones in the market are very fragile devices that need extra care. However, that's not the case with the new phone from Cherry Mobile. The device called the Cherry Mobile DEFENDER, has the right amount of specs covered by a tough, rugged metal body.

In terms of its design, the DEFENDER's body is covered with metal, specifically aluminum, and with corners made up of rubber and hard plastic. It is relatively thick having a measurement of 16.6mm in body thickness. Thanks to that, the Cherry Mobile DEFENDER is one bulky device.

It comes in with a 4.7-inch display, smaller than the usual smartphones and would probably give a hard time to people with big hands. But on the bright side, though, it may be thick and heavy, Due to its durable housing. The DEFENDER can take sudden drops like a pro, even falling from chest height would not, even a little bit, damage the device. The reason behind this is the rubber corners, which absorbs the force of the drop.

Its toughness isn't all just about its rugged frame. The Cherry Mobile DEFENDER also comes with the same dust and water IP68 certification as of the Galaxy S7 series. It has plastic flaps on the top, covering the 3.5mm headphone jack, and one on the bottom, protecting the USB charging port. Also, its microSD and SIM slot located at the rear side has a rubber membrane coupled with a plastic cover to keep the water out and requires a small flat screwdriver to remove it. However, you must not open the flaps on the beach or some dusty places to avoid dirt from being lodged in them, thus, making the device susceptible to water.

One weakness we found out, though, ison its externals. Despite having its screen protected by a scratch-proof Gorilla Glass, the Cherry Mobile DEFENDER's screen is not shatter-proof. Meaning that if the phone was dropped on rocks or any protruding objects "screen-first", we can't ensure that this will go out unharmed.

Though it may look like that the company only focused on the DEFENDER's toughness, its internals was not left out. Under the hood of the DEFENDER lies MediaTek's Helio P10 processor coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB built-in memory storage. It sports an 18MP main camera that capable enough to take the perfect shots on your adventure. It runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and is fueled with a hefty 4200mAh battery which could go for 2 days straight on a single charge.

All in all, the Cherry Mobile DEFENDER may not be the fastest and toughest phone in the Philippines market today. But it is, though, the best choice for you if you're looking for a tough, IP68 certified, Helio P10 with 3GB RAM and 4200mAh equipped smartphone under PHP 10,000. That's right, the Cherry Mobile DEFENDER's retail price is just PHP 9,999. You may try to throw or drop it anywhere you like, granted it won't land it on rocks, screen-first. That is, though, if you happen to find one in your local Cherry Mobile stores, reports have it that the device is selling like hotcakes. So if you like adventures and want this device as your companion, sadly finding one first is the adventure you must take.
