Compare Images by DSLR & Smartphone
The camera of smartphone is really great recently. You might think "DSLR cameras are for camera lovers, right?" I can't deny it. Even so, I am glad that I bought a DSLR camera. Here is a comparsion which shows the difference of photos taken by DSLR camera and smartphone camera.
Nov 18, 2015
Cameras to Compare
I am going to compare Canon's entry model, EOS 100D, and Apple's iPhone 6.
These are the only cameras I have. There is no particular meaning to why it's not iPhone6 nor Android phones.
The sensor size of the iPhone 6 is 1/3 and the focal length is 4.1mm. So I used 18mm lens of Canon APS-C to get close to that.
Landscape Photo Compare
First, the comparsion of landscape photos. I set the focal length of EOS 100D as 18mm and exposure as auto mode to take photos at the same angle.
Apple iPhone 6(-) / 4.1 mm / f/2.2 / ISO 32 / 1/1208 sec
Canon EOS 100D(EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM) / 18.0 mm / f/7.1 / ISO 100 / 1/125 sec
Can you find the difference between the two pictures?
You may find some difference. However, it's hard to tell which picture was taken by what.
The reason is simple, the photo size is too small to compare photo quality.
Let's trim them to the same size for compare.
It's not difficult to find the photo by EOS 100D is clearer than the one by iPhone 6 and easy to read.
On the other hand, you can find something interesting when you look at the background.
First, the picture by the iPhone 6 appears to be sharper. You can easily tell that the depth of field is different. In other words, when you take pictures with smartphones, the background is pretty sharp.
When you look closely at the picture taken by the iPhone 6, you can tell that the pillar looks slanted. It's not to say which is better, but it's interesting that there are these differences when you look at them closely.
Upclose Photo Compare
Next, I got close to the object as possible.
Apple iPhone 6(-) / 4.1 mm / f/2.2 / ISO 32 / 1/370 sec
Canon EOS 100D(EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM) / 18.0 mm / f/6.3 / ISO 100 / 1/125 sec
DSLR camera is not good for upclose shooting. It's difficult to get any closer than this with the 18mm lens.
Change it to 55mm lens for one more try.
Canon EOS 100D(EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM) / 55.0 mm / f/7.1 / ISO 100 / 1/125 sec
I was able to get more upclose than before. However, I can't shoot any closer than this.
Shooting upclose to the object is called "macro shooting". You might be surprised, smartphone cameras are better for "macro shooting" than DSLR cameras.
DSLR is bad for upclose photography ?
Don't belittle DSLR !
First, the size of images are different. Trim it to the same size, it's not hard to find the flower in the image by EOS 100D (55mm) is larger.
And what's great about DSLR cameras is that you can "change the lens according to your photography needs".
Canon EOS 100D(EF-S60mm f/2.8 Macro USM) / 60.0 mm / f/8.0 / ISO 400 / 1/100 sec
Just use marco lens for "macro shooting".
Low light Shoot Compare
Last, shooting in low light condition. I took pictures of the bookshelf in my room.
Apple iPhone 6(-) / 4.1 mm / f/2.2 / ISO 1000 / 1/15 sec
Canon EOS 100D(EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM) / 18.0 mm / f/3.5 / ISO 1600 / 1/13 sec
I've come to notice that indoors can be pretty low light even if the lights are on.
When shooting accessories and food, if you use strong lighting, it will make a big difference.
It's easy to find the photo by iPhone 6 has much more noise.
When you expand the image, the difference is obvious.
The lines in the iPhone 6 picture is noisy. And the color seems strange too.
DSLR cameras are much better than smartphone cameras in low light conditions.
Advantages of Smartphone Cameras
Although the DSLR cameras are awesome, the smartphone cameras also have their advantages.
Let's see the advantages which only smartphone cameras have.
It's obvious that the smartphone is smaller in size. Even the smallest and lightest DSLR camera, Canon EOS 100D, is just a big and heavy camera compared to a smartphone.
iPhone 6 is compact in size, and you can't tell the difference between photos that you upload to your blog.
You always have it with you
Ask someone who has a DSLR camera ; Which do you carry longer, DSLR camera or smartphone?
We usually carry a smartphone except when we sleep.
The people who have their cameras at all times are probably battlefeild photographers, news photographers, and paparazzis.
In general, people carry around smartphones, not cameras.
Deep depth of field
With DSLR cameras you can take neat pictures with blurred backgrounds, while smartphones are good for sharp backgrounds.
For example, when you take pictures during your journey, you would want to see the whole scenery instead of a blurry background.
Always Connected to Internet
The most important point of smartphone cameras is the network.
You can share on SNS as soon as you take a photo, as well as send it to your friends or parents.
Snap a photo during your trip. The details are sharp so you know at once where you took it. And you can share it over the internet. These are the advantages of a smartphone camera.
DSLR cameras and smartphone cameras each have their own advantages. It's difficult to decide which one is better.
It depends on our purpose.
If you want to take snap photos, smartphone cameras are enough, and if you want to take more clearer pictures, you should buy a DSLR camera.
