Last week we saw leaked images of BLACK SHARK's upcoming debut device, its gaming phone. We saw an unusual-looking phone with what looked like a large attachment on the top end. Well now, the BLACK SHARK Gaming Phone is official, with Xiaomi announcing the BLACK SHARK phone in a high-profile press event in Beijing, China.
Xiaomi's new gaming smartphone was developed in tandem with gaming product company BLACK SHARK Technology, which has deep ties with Xiaomi. The device was developed as a response to the Razer Phone, which it directly competes with. Like the Razer Phone, the BLACK SHARK phone has a strong gamer aesthetic, but it lacks the 120Hz display that the Razer Phone is packing. On the other hand, it makes up for this with some other features.
The phone itself has a large 6-inch 2.5D glass FHD+ display with 2160 x 1080 resolution. Inside is a top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor with a gaming-fast Adreno 630 GPU, and options for up to 8GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage. It also has dual cameras on the back, one 12-megapixel and the other 20-megapixel, with a generous f/1.75 aperture. It has something Xiaomi calls a "dark light enhancement technology" which presumably helps with low-light shots, but the technology behind it hasn't been put to detail yet. A front fingerprint scanner, USB Type-C and a 4,000mAh battery round it out. It'll come with Android 8.1 Oreo out-of-the-box.
What sets the phone apart is its solid gamer's aesthetic; the metal unibody of the phone is ripe with hard angles and green lighting trim, and it has a liquid cooling system to help keep the heat off for those long gaming sessions. It also has a plug-and-play gamepad attachment that plugs onto the top of the device. This attachment has a dedicated analog stick, like you would find on the PlayStation Portable, and has an internal 340mAh battery that is good for over 30 hours of game time. It connects to the phone through Bluetooth. It's as elegant a solution as one could hope for to provide a responsive gaming control method without bolting an unwieldy analog stick right onto the phone. The phone also has a "Shark Key" at the left side which is used to put the phone into full-gaming mode.
Pricing begins at CNY2,999 (PHP24,855) for the 6GB/64GB variant and CNY3,499 (about PHP29,000) for the 8GB/128GB version. The controller attachment is sold separately for CNY179 (about PHP1,500). The BLACK SHARK Gaming Phone will come out in China first and will be available in two colors: Polar Night and Sky Gray.
