Apple blames external factors as the cause for iPhone fires in China

Apple says that external factors are the causes of reported iPhone fires in China, and not product faults.

Dec 12, 2016

Eight consumers reported that their iPhone 6 series handsets had undergone combustion or explosion. Apple responded saying that the explosions are caused by external factors and not a physical defect of their signature phones.

Considering the recent controversy faced by Samsung when their Galaxy Note7 devices had reported to smoke, catch fire, and explode, consumers are very keen on keeping their eyes on the latest smartphones out in the market. That is why having eight reports of the same incident on a product like iPhone, would spark controversies. Some netizens blamed the manufacturers about their trend of making their devices thinner, having not enough expansion space for the lithium battery.

The US tech giant immediately made a way to control the situation. They conducted an investigation regarding the reported explosions and made several tests on the device itself. Only a tiny percentage of lithium batteries can catch fire, according to statistics. The two most common causes of explosions are counterfeit chargers that are being subjected to extreme heat and impact damage. Apple claimed that the latter one is responsible for all the eight explosions. They said that the tests of the device found "no cause for concern with these products" but instead, physical damage is the real culprit of the said "thermal events."

Having complaints about the safety of foreign smartphones, Apple's sales in China has gone down. It raised a suspicion and distrust of all foreign phones within the Chinese consumers.

About Apple iPhone 6 16GB

The biggest problem is which to choose! An in-depth review of the two evolutionary iPhones, iPhone 6/6 Plus. How has the usability changed with its increase in size?

the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 (left) and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus (right)

September 19, 2014, Apple released its latest smartphone, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Compared to the existing iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, the new models have made a big evolution, such as the increase in display size and having a completely new design, and we can call it the "iPhone of the new generation."
According to Apple, sales of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus hit a new record, selling more than 10 million units in three days after its release. 7 years have passed since the original iPhone has been released, but the momentum knows no bounds.

This article will be an in-depth review of these two models.

* This is a translation from the original Japanese article from kakaku.com.

Does the increase in size change the usability?

The biggest point of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is "the increase in size". The iPhone 6 has a 4.7-inch display, and the iPhone 6 Plus a 5.5-inch display. The difference in size is obvious when you line it up with the 4-inch iPhone 5s. You can tell that the size has increased quite a bit. There is no difference such as the higher-end model and the low-cost model like last year's iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. I guess you could say that the iPhone 6 is the basic model, and the iPhone 6 Plus is the big-display model. In addition to the body size and display, the differnces are, whether it features optical image stabilization and an user interface for landscape mode, and the capacity of the battery. Both models come in three colors : silver, gold and space gray.

The display size has increased so the body itself has gotten bigger as well. I mainly use the 4-inch iPhone 5 and I got used to the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 righty away. Using the Japanese "flick" input method with one hand is also a piece of cake. I'm right handed, but I have no trouble using the phone with my left hand as well. The width, that affects the "holdability", has gone from 58.6mm to 67.0mm, but because of it's new round design and thinness, you don't feel that it's that wide. However, when you actually use it, it's not the width but the height that becomes a concern. Since the height has increased from 123.8mm to 138.1mm, when you use it with one hand, your thumb doesn't reach the upper part of the display that you were able to reach before. So, there's a useful feature called Reachability. When you double-tap the home button, the content on the screen will move down to the bottom, making it possible to reach with your thumb. If you make use of this feature, you can operate the phone with one hand, not having to adjust your grip everytime.

On the other hand, the iPhone 6 Plus is 158.1mm tall and 77.8mm wide. There's no denying it's big. It fits in chest pockets and pant pockets but it feels stuffed. When I first held it in my hand I thought, "I can use this with one hand", but when I actually tried it on the train, I instantly realized that using it one-handed is really difficult. Honestly, it's nearly impossible. Using both hands is fundamental.

As I have stated before, the iPhone 6 Plus has a special user interface for landscape mode that makes the best of the large 5.5-inch display. On the home screen the dock is displayed on the right, and for certain apps, such as Mail and Messages, a dual-pane mode is featured, making it more efficient. And of course, since the display is big, pictures and videos are easier to view, and e-books are easier to read. For those of you who can't read small letters, the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus must be "the large-display iPhone" you've been waiting for.

The display resolution of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 is 1334x750, and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus is 1920x1080. The contrast ratio is higher compared to the iPhone 5s, making it possible to express black, "more black". Though the resolution and display size have increased, both models maintain a brightness rating of 500cd.
A new technology called "Dual-domain pixels" is featured for wider viewing angles. Apple calls this new display, "Retina HD display". The display is very high quality and I was especially surprised by how wide the view angle is. Because of the big display of the iPhone 6 Plus, there should be times when you show the screen to multiple people. The wide view angle will sure be useful then.

The size of the iPhone 6 is 138.1mm(height) x 67.0mm(width) x 6.9mm(depth), and weighs 129g. There's no problem using it with one hand. It's bigger and heavier than the iPhone 5, but it fits well in the hand. The size of the iPhone 6 Plus is 158.1mm(height) x 77.8mm(width) x 7.1mm(depth), and weighs 172g. It's difficult to use with one hand. It's not impossible, but I almost dropped it when I used the Japanese "flick" input method and when I took pictures.

The 4-inch iPhone 5s (left), the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 (center) and the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus (right). The increase in size is obvious.

When you double-tap the home button the screen drops to the bottom, making it possible to tap the icons with one hand. How much it drops differs between the iPhone 6 (left) and the iPhone 6 Plus (right). The iPhone 6 Plus drops more because it has a bigger screen.

There is a feature called the "Display Zoom" that shows icons and text larger. You are asked to choose from "standard" or "zoomed" during initial setup. (left) The center screenshot is in "standard" and on the right is "zoomed". Not only the text and icons but pictures attached to messages are larger too.

The iPhone 6 Plus has a special user interface for landscape mode. On the home screen the dock is displayed on the right. For the Messages app, conversation threads are showed on the left and messages on the right.

Phase detection autofocus allows faster and more accurate auto focusing! The iPhone 6 Plus also features optical image stabilization.

As for the camera, the megapixel count and lens aperture are the same as iPhone 5s, but the sensor is new, making it more useful. To be more specific, "phase detection autofocus" that is adopted in DSLR cameras allows faster and more accurate auto focusing. You don't notice the difference in bright light, but in low light conditions the fast autofocus was obvious. The autofocus had high accuracy even before, so you can say that it's been improved. This is a feature of the iOS 8, but having exposure compensation should be notable. When you tap where you want to set focus, a box appears. Next to this box on the right, an exposure mark is added. Swipe up to make it brighter or swipe down to make it darker. "Timer mode", a self-timer that can be set for 3 or 10 seconds, has also been added. When using the "Timer mode" it automatically shoots in "burst mode" and selects the best from multiple pictures. You also can't miss the panorama mode, where the image size has increased up to 43 mega pixels. With the iPhone 6 Plus, optical image stabilization is also equipped. It allows you to take pictures with less noise even in low light conditions.

As for videos, Apple has added a strong video stabilization that they call "cinematic video stabilization". In addition to the previous 120fps slow motion video, you can now take even slower 240fps videos. Being able to record 240fps slow motion videos without the resolution changing is even rare for digital cameras. A new feature called "Time-lapse" is fun too. It generates accelerated sequences of photos taken over a period of time, so you can watch the movement of clouds or plants growing in a short time. You can create fun videos depending on the idea. All you need to do is tap the record button. Its simplicity is one of iPhone's desirable points. Even though it has new features such as optical image stabilization and "Time-lapse", its simplicity is still inherited.

With iOS 8 exposure compensation is available. Tap where you want to set focus. An exposure mark appears on the upper right of the focus box. Swipe up to increase the exposure and make it brighter or swipe down to decrease the exposure and make it darker. To use the "Timer mode" tap the clock icon at the top of the screen. You can set it to 3 or 10 seconds. It automatically shoots in "burst mode" and selects the best picture from multiple snaps.

Indoor pictures can be surprisingly low light, causing hand shake. The iPhone 6 Plus has optical image stabilization that allows you to take pictures with less blur.A night picture I took casually. I didn't mind the composition or anything so I was surprised how low-noise it turned out. The effect of the optical image stabilization is great.

Megapixel count and lens aperture haven't changed for the "iSight" camera but it has adopted "phase detection autofocus" for faster and more accurate auto focusing. "True Tone" flash still remains. The camera lens sticks out a little bit. It won't be a problem if you use a phone case. For those who don't use phone cases should be a little careful.

"FaceTime" camera adopts a bright F2.2 lens. Like the "iSight" camera, you can now shoot in burst mode, allowing you to take better selfies.

Slow motion 240Time lapse

iOS 8: it looks the same, but has changed a lot

Next, I'll look further into iOS 8. iOS drastically changed it's design with last year's iOS 7. So there aren't many changes in terms of the design, but the iOS 8 has changed a lot on the inside. For Messages, you can send not only text but also your voice or your location. It may not be useful for those who mainly use trains, but for those who use cars a lot you can quickly and safely exchange messages.

The editing feature has improved for "Photos". Like "iPhoto", you can make minor adjustments for exposure, brightness, and contrast. It also includes tools to adjust the light and color simply by just swiping. For the "Camera", as I have mentioned before, exposure compensation, "Time-lapse", and "Timer mode" have been added.

iOS 8 has opened up many features for app developers. For example, third parties can now use sharing extensions for Safari and Photos. Also, you can use third-party keyboards like Android. Many keyboard apps such as "ATOK for iOS", "mazec", and "Simeji" have already appeared in the App Store. This is a big topic for those who were disappointed with the Japanese input. From Photos, you can directly access third-party image filters and editing tools. Even more, "Touch ID", the fingerprint sensor offered on the iPhone 5s is now opened to third parties. "1Password" is the only app that uses it for now, but it should be adopted for many apps in the future that uses important data.

Another feature is "Handoff", where you can switch between devices without losing any work. Linking Apple devices has also improved, you can send/receive phone calls on your iPad and Mac. There are many other features that are worth checking out such as healthcare, family sharing, and "iCloud Drive". Apps and games that are compatible with iOS 8 are listed on the App Store so you should check it out. Devices that support iOS 8 are not only the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus but also iPhone 4s and later, iPad 2 and later, iPod touch (5th generation) and later.

Tap and hold the microphone button to record you voice and send immediately with "Tap to Talk" in MessagesBeing able to attach multiple photos at once is a happy upgrade. If it's a recent photo you took, you can choose it instanly and don't have to open the photos app.

various editing is possible on the Photos app itselfyou can smoothly connect to thrid-party photo filters and editing apps

Widgets in "Notification Center". "Notification Center" is a feature that displays information such as your schedule, weather, and stock prices when you swipe down from the upper part of the screen. You can now add widgets of compatible apps. Yahoo!Japan's news app is an example. The app "1Password" uses "Touch ID", the fingerprint sensor.

"A8" chip is built on second-generation 64-bit architecture. Has better battery life.

Next, I will talk about the processing power of the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. The results of "Geekbench3", a benchmark app that measures general performance, is as below. There isn't a big difference as to comparing the iPhone 5 and the iPhone 5s, but you can tell that the performance has still improved. The processor is equipped with an "A8" chip built on second-generation 64-bit architecture. According to Apple, compared to the original iPhone, the CPU performance is up to 50 percent faster and the GPU performance is up tp 84 percent faster. Not only is the processing power fast, it's also energy efficient. Compared to the "A7" chip, it is more energy efficient by up to 50 percent. As a result the battery life has improved greatly. Especially, the iPhone 6 Plus has a high-capacity battery and provides up to 12 hours of use on LTE. (up to 10 hours on the iPhone 5s) Talk time is up to 24 hours on 3G (up to 10 hours on iPhone 5s), and standby time is up to 16 days (up to 10 days on iPhone 5s). The battery life for the iPhone 6 has improved too, but the iPhone 6 Plus is more obvious. For those who don't want to worry about battery life, the long battery life of the iPhone 6 Plus is a big point.

Also equipped is the "M8 motion coprocessor" that continuously measures data from the accelerometer, compass, gyroscope, and a barometer. Its feature is to offload work from the A8 chip and to collect and process data. The new barometer that's on the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus measures elevation change not only when you climb mountains but also when you climb steps, so it may be pretty useful. In terms of performance, "Metal" is noteworthy. It is a graphics API that has less overhead than OpenGL and more direct access to the GPU hardware. Games optimized with Metal deliver much better graphics and are energy-efficient.

iPhone 5 722 1296

* The OS for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is "iOS 8", and for the iPhone 5s, 5c, and 5, "iOS 7". From the results you can see that the performance has improved.

Benchmark results for the iPhone 6 Plus(left) and the iPhone 6(right). I measured it a couple of times and the score would change a little bit, but there wasn't a big difference.

The bigger iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Hint of a new generation.

That's all for the in-depth look at the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. It's obvious that it's improved a lot. You may tend to just look at how the display has gotten bigger, but the basic features such as the camera, process power, and network have gotten much better too. The interface of "iOS 8" hasn't changed but opening various features to third parties will possibly lead to even more improvement of usability. Linking with Mac and iPad and such has also improved, and I got the impression that it's gone to the next level as a whole. There may be controversy over the size getting bigger. If you say that Apple just followed the trend, that's that. But they announced the iPhone 6/6 Plus and "Apple Watch" at the same time, so they must have an assumption of using them together. Maybe the size for the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus are different because they are trying to figure out the best suitable size of the iPhone to use with the Apple Watch. Either way, the increase in the display size is a change that makes me wonder of a new generation for the iPhone.

Lastly, I would like to talk about this very difficult question: "iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus?" First of all, whichever you choose you can experience the new iPhone to the fullest. The deciding factor is the size and battery. The iPhone 6 Plus is big for a smartphone. It's difficult to use with one hand like previous iPhones. So if you want to use it one-handed, you should choose the iPhone 6. On the other hand, the iPhone 6 Plus has a big screen and the battery life is long. Personally, I am troubled by the battery often, so I planned on changing to the iPhone 6 Plus. However, using these two models for this article, I realized that I was using the iPhone 6 longer. So I'm going to make my final decision after using them both for a little bit longer.
